STEINER EXPANDS LINE OF PEAK-PERFORMANCE MARINE OPTICS

Steiner's Commander V Binocular Sets Standard For Glassing in Darkness and Difficult Conditions

MOORESTOWN, N.J. April 4, 2002 – Plowing through waves on a reach in the Southern Ocean -- they call this the "roaring forties"-- and the conditions are fierce. It's blowing a steady 38 knots as the gray clouds and rain cast a dark gloom over the horizon. On leg two of the Volvo Ocean Race and nothing comes easy in the stretch from Capetown to Sidney, considered the most difficult. John Kostecki, skipper of "Illbruck" is in the lead and plans on keeping it that way. "Covering 32,000 nautical miles around the world can only be done with the very best equipment. That's why we chose Steiner's Commander V," said Kostecki. The Commander V lets him take a look at the competition and look ahead for important visual waypoints. This is where the brightest optics, the most stable integrated compass, and the toughest construction are critical.

Available with or without compass, the Steiner Commander V's high-definition optics offer a wide, three-dimensional view of the horizon, making it easy to identify navigational points and other watercraft. Through the use of innovative electronic lens-coating-technology, the Porro prism binoculars provide unmatched light transmission (up to 96 percent) and bright images, even in extreme low-light conditions.

The Commander V with the internal compass is a tool for both observation and navigation. Illuminated only when needed, the large compass with reticle can be activated with the touch of a button, making it simple to get a bearing or determine distance to another boat or distant navigational marker.

These rubber-armored binoculars are designed to be rugged yet convenient even when up against rough seas, poor visibility, flying spray or bright sunlight. Steiner has redesigned the compass integration on the latest edition of the Commander (the compass is now built into the binocular rather than attached to the top) for better durability. Rubber armoring on the compass also protects the unit from sudden drops or bumps against other equipment. The automatic focus system, with memory eye-pieces, keeps all images in clear focus at all times. Once set for the user's eye, no re-adjustment is necessary. The ergonomically contoured eyecups, with ventilated oculars, block distracting side light and water.

Designed for use in all weather conditions, the Commander V is equipped with a rain-guard eyepiece cover that can be added or removed easily, and the navy blue rubber coating protects against impact while providing a comfortable, steady grip when on deck. Users can select from a traditional carrying strap or a brightly-colored floatation strap, and these can be changed easily with the patented Clic-Loc® quick-change system. The Commander V is mil-spec waterproof and weighs in at less than 40 oz.

Use of Steiner's Commander V is not just limited to Ocean racing or the Navy SEALs. Finding a tranquil Caribbean anchorage in darkness is an easy chore with these optics. Spotting "bird-play" from your flying bridge over glaring mid-day conditions will be faster and easier than with other binoculars; for fishermen, the Commander V will simply put you on the fish faster.

Both Commander models are available nationwide through Steiner's network of dealer locations and are protected by a 30-year warranty.
